Coming Attraction: This Book Will Not Be Fun

Another snow day! Thank you to Edelweiss for providing plenty of reading material for this snowed-in librarian!

This Book Will Not Be Fun
by Cirocco Dunlap
Illustrated by Olivier Tallec
Published by Random House Books for Young Readers
Release date: June 6, 2017

Convinced his book will not be fun, a bespectacled mouse decides to wait silently for it to be finished.  However, even this stubborn mouse can’t help but be surprised by the sudden appearance of a Word Eating Flying Whale and Glow-in-the-Dark Worm that make a sudden appearance in his story.   Wanting to tell them to leave, he follows them and is dismayed to wander into a dance party filled with, as he puts it, impossible creatures. Will the uptight mouse give in and have fun after all?

Mouse starts off as such a stubborn character, determined to eliminate anything fun and unexpected from his story.  However, he gradually lets his guard down as he comes to accept  the fun in the story that he is in.

The brightly colored cover of this story shows a horrified looking mouse trying to push away several happily dancing creatures.  Inside the book, most of the illustrations are set on a plain white background, which fits the personality of our logical minded mouse!

As an elementary school librarian, I am no stranger to occasionally hearing phrases such as “this book will not be fun”, as I try to help reluctant readers choose books.   Fortunately, as our mouse narrator came to realize, even the most critical of readers can be swayed by the unexpected, often hilarious events that came happen in a story.
